Tan Like a Pro

Before and After Tips
Before Tanning Tips

Exfoliate and/or remove old spray tan at least four hours before your appointment Shower : Use an oil free body exfoliant* or tan eraser* product with a professional exfoliating mitt* using circular motions. Concentrate on dry skin areas. Bathtub (preferred) : Soak in warm bath water for at least 10 minutes. Try dropping in a Tan Bomb* or Epsom salts while soaking for best results. Then use a mitt* or face cloth in circular motions to easily remove previous spray tan and to exfoliate and prime the skin. Pro Tip : For even better results, use a dry skin body brush before showering or bathing. Use circular motions to remove dead skin cells, concentrating on dry areas especially hands, elbows, knees and around the ankles/feet. This will ensure an even absorption of the tanning formula into your skin and avoid patchiness and discolouration. We recommend our Glo Getter dry skin brushes*. Dry skin brushing may also assist in reducing the appearance of cellulite with regular use! *Products are available to purchase at Glo Getter

Shower at least four hours before your tan appointment A warm to hot shower will leave your pores open which will affect the way the tanning formula adheres to your skin. Your pores will need several hours after showering to minimise again. Pro Tip : A cold shower or cold running water for the last 30 seconds of your shower will minimise pores more efficiently. We’re sure you’ve also heard of all the extra health benefits of cold water therapy by now!

Avoid moisturisers, make-up, perfumes and deodorant before your appointment Come to your appointment with clean, dry skin if possible. Au natural is best! Some products contain ingredients which will affect the way the tanning formula is absorbed into the skin. Water based products are usually fine, however oil or alcohol based products will interfere with the tanning formula. Best to play it safe and ditch the products. Pro Tip : Stop using retinoids and hydroxy acids from your skin care regime 24 hours before your appointment. These ingredients increase cell turnover, which will cause your tan to fade more quickly. Don't Stress : If you need to arrive with make up and deodorant on, we will supply you with body and face wipes to wipe off and leave your skin nice and clean before you step into the spray tan booth.

Bring or wear dark, loose fitting clothing to your appointment We recommend wearing a loose dress or loose t-shirt/top with floppy bottoms. Make sure there are no tight waistbands or cuffs as these may rub the colour off the skin initially and leave marks. Thongs or slides are best for footwear. Dark colours are recommended to avoid staining lighter coloured clothing until you wash off your tan*. *If you choose the clear tan option, dark clothes are not required. Pro Tip : Avoid denim, socks, tight undies, activewear, closed footwear and go bra-less if possible!

Complete other beauty treatments first Be sure to plan your other beauty treatments such as facials, massages, manicures, hair removal, etc. before your tan appointment. Having these services after your spray tan will be a surefire way to rub off your new GLO. Pro Tip : Hair styling and make-up application are absolutely fine after you’ve washed off your spray tan and the colour has absorbed.

Don't shave (or wax) the day of your tan appointment Shaving and waxing must be completed at least 24 hours before your appointment. This gives the skin time to calm down, resulting in a flawless and comfortable spray tan. If you shave or wax too close to your appointment, the spray tan may seep into your pores and leave dark spots. It can also irritate your skin, particularly if you have sensitive skin.

Try to avoid wearing jewellery. We do have trinket bowls in the tanning booths to hold your jewellery while you're tanning. However Glo Getting Tanning Studio is not responsible for jewellery or valuables left behind by the client.

After Tanning Tips

Wait at least 2–8 hours before having a shower after your spray tan Allowing adequate time allows your spray tan formula to completely absorb into your skin and continue to develop for up to 24 hours. However, it is advised to rinse off after 2–8 hours, depending on depth of colour desired and choice of tan formula (clear or bronzer). When showering, just use warm water or a natural body wash. Avoid using abrasive scrubbing and hot water. It is best to simply rinse away the formula with your hands in a circular motion until the water runs completely clear. Pat yourself dry.

Stay away from all moisture for at least four hours following your appointment Moisture is a surefire way to ruin your freshly applied spray tan! Avoid showering, swimming, sweating (avoid exercise), washing hands, or any other applications such as moisturiser or makeup. These will interfere with the absorption and may leave you with water spots, streaks or patchiness. Pro Tip : If it's raining on the day of your appointment, bring an umbrella and raincoat. Loose trackie pants and a loose long sleeve top with closed shoes are also recommended if it is bucketing down!

Avoid tight clothing straight after your spray tan Tight clothing such as activewear, denim, bras, socks, etc. are more likely to rub against your skin and remove the tanning formula and leave marks. Sandals and thongs are recommended for footwear. Once you’ve washed off the tan formula feel free to wear what you like. Pro Tip : A dark coloured bath robe is your best option if you’re at home while waiting to wash off your tan.

Use an oil free moisturiser twice a day Moisturise every morning and evening. This will help you maintain your tan and keep your skin looking healthy and radiant. Oil-based products, such as moisturisers, lotions, and massage oils, should be avoided because they break down the DHA and cause the tan to fade much faster. We prefer products that are free of parabens, alcohol, and artificial fragrances. Our tanning professionals can assist you in making product* selections. *Products are available to purchase at Glo Getter

Avoid steam rooms, saunas and long, hot showers Hot water and steam will cause your tan to fade faster. Your skin's grip on the spray tan will weaken.

Avoid harsh chemicals and don’t exfoliate until you are ready to say goodbye! Chlorine in pools and hot tubs, epsom salt baths, massages, fashion tape, and acid-based facial creams can accelerate the fading of your tan. Exfoliate when you are ready to create the perfect canvas for next spray tan! Pro Tip : Because the alcohol in perfume can also strip away the tan, spray perfume lightly over garments rather than directly on the skin.
